About the scholarship 
The ARC Training Centre for Advanced Technologies in Rail Track Infrastructure (ITTC-Rail) provides a platform that assists in the transformation of the rail industry to embrace frontier technologies in efficient heavy haul operations through the utilization of new materials, innovative design and construction techniques and advanced manufacturing of track components. 

ITTC Rail will commence operations in early 2018 and will run over 4 years, aiming to transform Australia’s rail construction and maintenance technologies through specialist training of industry-focused researchers. This objective is to be achieved by close collaboration with companies within the rail supply chain, interdisciplinary programs promoting novel design approaches and innovative fabrication of products delivered through advanced manufacturing techniques. 

The programs will address the key challenges inherent in building cost-effective rail infrastructure to meet the future demands of rail transportation. The Centre brings together the minds of world-class researchers who are experts in their field and the outcome of this collaborative effort is to develop safe, reliable and cost-effective rail networks that benefit the nation. Swinburne University of Technology is leading one of the four research programs within ITTC-Rail. 

A PhD scholarship is available for 3 years (with the possibility to apply for a 6 month further extension) in the field of geotechnical engineering, under the supervision of Prof. Arul Arulrajah. The PhD student will conduct research in a project involving computational geotechnics, laboratory testing, field works and theoretical modelling related to the topic: Cyclic performance of recycled demolition wastes in railway sub-ballast.

Skills and experience
To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate the following:
• Bachelor of Civil Engineering in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering (with honours) or closely related discipline.
• Meet all relevant criteria to gain entry to Swinburne’s PhD program. 
• Expertise in specialised geotechnical experimental works
• Expertise in geotechnical instrumentation and performance monitoring
