About the scholarship
A 3-year fully funded PhD scholarship is available for a graduate with Masters or Honours Degree in Material Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering to develop new lightweight tubular hybrid structures for structural applications in transportation. This project builds on previous research outcomes on tubular aluminium alloy structures filled with polymer foams for crashworthiness. The scope of work ranges from the design stage through to fabrication of prototypes. The PhD student will develop an effective modelling methodology to optimize the design of the hybrid structure with selection of metal and foam materials to meet engineering specifications, as well as investigate ways to manufacture the hybrid structures.

The project provides opportunities for the student to gain extensive experience through working within multiple disciplines of material science, mechanical and manufacturing engineering, and to develop new skills through application of some advanced experimental techniques.

The project requires interaction with Industry where professional documentation, presentation and timely reporting of research outcomes are very important. This is a very challenging project, which needs a dedicated, independent and solution-driven student.
