About the PhD Scholarship
Three (3) PhD scholarships available at Swinburne University’s Centre for Urban Transitions
Swinburne Centre for Urban Transitions http://www.swinburne.edu.au/research/urban-transitions/ has three (3) PhD scholarships available for people with a passion for understanding urban transitions through in depth research.
The Centre for Urban Transitions at Swinburne was established in 2017 to produce high quality and high impact research focused on planning and governance to achieve needed urban transitions, both in Australia and internationally.
The Centre has a distinct role within the broader field of urban change. Its research themes tackle three of the major urban challenges, which require a holistic assessment of the social, political and behavioral influences and innovations that shape cities.
These are:
• Planning and design for de-carbonisation and urban regeneration.
• Strategies to improve housing affordability and spatial equity
• Promoting new ways of urban living from a social, health, environmental and economic perspective.
We invite applications from suitably qualified candidates to undertake a PhD in in these or other areas relevant to urban transitions. Successful candidates will be able to develop their own project if it fits with the broader aims and supervisory capacity of the Centre. The scholarships are not part of a funded research project, but students will be expected to contribute to the Centre’s publication and impact program and aspirations.
Successful applicants will join a cohort of PhD students already at the Centre and be involved in its vibrant research culture.
How to apply
Applications will be assessed on the basis of i) their academic merit; ii) policy merit; and, iii) clarity of proposal’s research question(s), data availability and methodological selection and justification. Existing peer-reviewed publication track-record is an advantage, but not a necessity. See ‘Key Selection Criteria’ for further information.
In order to apply please supply:
• A one page expression of interest including reasons for wanting to undertake a PhD with the Centre for Urban Transitions;
• CV indicating qualifications and experience;
• A one page proposal for the PhD including the research question and proposed methodology; and indication of academic literature/debate your research relates to.
