About the Factory of the Future at Swinburne

Swinburne’s Factory of the Future is a hub where industry and Swinburne researchers co-create the future of Advanced Manufacturing in Australia with a particular emphasis on digitalization and Industry 4.0. We do this through assisting companies in articulating new business outcomes and by making these come alive through (digital) strategy development, design and rapid prototyping.

About the job

Manufacturing in Australia and internationally is going digital and so are we.

We are looking for a Digital Product Design Engineer to join our Factory of the Future. In this role, you will provide a range of skills from concept development and design, design for manufacture and prototyping to the development of a digital twin for the Factory of the Future and the products we prototype – computational abilities in addition to product design skills are therefore essential. Merging the digital and real worlds of manufacturing, you will be able to augment the “as-designed” object through overlays of data from the “as-built” world and models derived from simulation to better understand and optimize your designs.

Reporting to the Senior Manager of the Factory of the Future, you will interact with our national and international external clients, Swinburne staff and students, community collaborators and partner startup companies

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have excellent problem solving, self and team management and communication skills. With a track record of customer-focused project delivery, you will be able to demonstrable your ability to liaise with a diverse range of client teams to translate of ideas into minimal viable products, prototypes and manufacturing specifications.

More specifically your application will demonstrate:

  • A bachelor degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering (related discipline) and/or equivalent industry experience
  • Demonstrated experience in developing prototypes for testing and evaluation and understanding of the requirements of designing for manufacture
  • Experience with digital and physical tools used in the development of prototypes and concept demonstrators including 3D Modelling, technical design, 3D Printing, CAD/CAM
  • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders to draft specifications, and document designs to meet internal and external client needs.

A full list of the selection criteria is available within the position description.
