About the job

Reporting to the Application Development Manager, the Software Engineer will collaborate with Application Services Build colleagues to develop, implement and maintain strategic software solutions. The Software Engineer role will possess basic software development skills within the Java stack to ensure that the software solutions are built in accordance of Swinburne’s Enterprise strategy.

This role is a great opportunity for a junior or recent IT graduate looking to make their mark in Swinburne IT Services. In return for your contributions and dedication, you will be a part of a business that allows opportunity for growth and focuses on your development. The opportunity is for a part-time position working 24 hours per week, ideally worked across 3 days.

This position resides within the Applications Build team in the Information Technology department. The Applications function ensures IT application services are delivered to the various academic and operational functions of the University to enable the University to optimise operational efficiency and effectiveness.

Key Accountabilities include:

  • Design, develop and maintain technical solutions that adhere to defined specifications and application development standards under the guidance of senior software engineer
  • Write coherent, well-structured code adhering to object-oriented programming principles and relevant university standards under the guidance of the senior software engineer
  • Learn and implement Test Driven Development (TDD) practices for software development
  • Learn and implement Unit Testing for the modules implemented
  • Develop and deliver software solutions in accordance with enterprise software strategy to meet the agreed project or BAU objectives

Skills and experience

To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate the following:

  • Experience in building Java based software solutions
  • Knowledge in Jenkins and Mavern build and Integration tools
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of utilizing REST and SOAP APIs 
  • Knowledge of relational databases and SQL
