About the job and the project
Swinburne University and University of Sydney are currently collaborating on the Bushfire and Natural Hazard CRC funded project. Our aim is to be able to better predict (a) the effects of prescribed burning and wildfires on the long-term sustainability of forests, and (b) real-time and near-future effects of fires on carbon and water fluxes at the landscape scale. Our team is focused on (a) developing new, spatially explicit, tools for quantifying key attributes of forests and fuels (such as biomass, soil moisture content, forest structure), and (b) integrating this information with other ground-based sources of data and information on those attributes, as well as other data relevant to carbon, water and nutrients.

We are currently seeking a person with a strong background in remote sensing and modelling of temporal changes in biophysical variables at a range of spatial scales. You will have experience in studies of land use change, or the effects of fire on vegetation, soils, and water, making use of remote sensing. Ideally, you will have either strong local and international connections to other researchers working in this and allied fields, and/or with strong knowledge of the latest developments in remote sensing and the derived data, and be accomplished in modelling of changes in biophysical variables in real time, will have a clear advantage.
