This is a 3 year postdoctoral position at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia to undertake research on gravitational lensing as part of the ARC Centre of Excellence for All-sky Astrophysics in 3 Dimensions (ASTRO 3D), under the guidance of Prof Karl Glazebrook and within the ‘Galaxy Evolution’ project of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence “ASTRO 3D”.

ASTRO 3D is a $40m Research Centre of Excellence led by Prof. Lisa Kewley. ASTRO 3D is funded over seven years by the Australian Research Council and supported by six collaborating Australian universities - ANU, University of Melbourne, University of Sydney, Swinburne University of Technology, University of Western Australia and Curtin University. Other Australian partners in the Centre include CSIRO, the Australian Astronomical Observatory and National Computational Infrastructure. ASTRO 3D includes collaborations with world leading international institutions. The ASTRO 3D mission is to produce a comprehensive picture of the evolution of matter, the chemical elements, and ionizing radiation in the Universe from shortly after the Big Bang to the present day. ASTRO 3D trains the next generation of scientific leaders and conducts nationwide education and public outreach programs.

ASTRO 3D supports the activities of around 200 researchers, administrative staff and students, provides a collaborative working environment and supports a flexible, family friendly working environment. About the job
We are looking for a suitably qualified candidate to fulfil a three year postdoctoral research position for the purpose of conducting research in collaboration with Prof. Karl Glazebrook. Our research will involve modelling of new gravitational lens systems discovered in deep imaging surveys, with a focus on the Dark Energy Survey, in order to constrain cosmology and the properties of dark and stellar matter in galaxies.

You will be expected to also conduct independent research and work collaboratively with the investigators of ASTRO 3D as well as other staff within the Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing. Furthermore, you may be required to supervise both postgraduate and undergraduate students.

About you
The appointment will be at Level A6 (currently AUD 84,201 p.a. salary) or Level B1 (currently AUD 94,910 p.a.) depending on prior experience.

To be successful in the role, you will have:

• A PhD in astronomy or astrophysics

• A strong track record of research in astronomy as demonstrated by publication

• Experience in the modelling of gravitational lens systems

• Prior post-doctoral experience (for a Level B appointment)
