About the role
We are looking for an enthusiastic, capable academic with a strong research background and experimental skills in devices, systems, nanomaterials, and sensing. As part of the ARENA project we aim to develop low-power, portable sensing system(s) to monitor hydrogen gas and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Novel nanomaterials will be synthesised and characterised for this project. Their sensing performance – sensitivity, selectivity, and stability – will be key performance criteria. In addition, commercial physical sensors including temperature, humidity and pressure sensors will be integrated into the system for full monitoring of the process. As our Postdoctoral Research Fellow, you are expected to conduct independent research and work collaboratively with other staff and industry collaborators on this project. You will be reporting to principal supervisor, Dr Mahnaz Shafiei, Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology for supervision and workload management.

The position is fixed term, full time for two years with a potential of an additional one-year extension.

About Swinburne
Swinburne is a place where your work can impact the national economy and wellbeing of our society. We promote diversity, support career development, provide flexibility and offer competitive salary packages.

This project funded by Australian Renewable Energy Agent (ARENA) Research and Development Program will provide experimental validation and integrated modelling of a hybrid renewable energy pilot plant that utilises solar power, energy storage and non-potable water to produce, store, and use hydrogen. The project will utilise two existing solar array technologies and battery packs to power treatment of non-potable water and electrolysis of treated water to produce and use hydrogen for re-use within the facility and for export. A micro-grid controls all components and delivers performance data to enterprise level models of hybrid renewable energy (RE) systems. The project would also develop next generation technologies in electrolysis, energy storage and chemical sensing for integration with the pilot plant to benchmark against existing commercial standards.

The collaborative project involves Queensland University of Technology, Griffith University, Swinburne University of Technology, The University of Tokyo and industry partners Sumitomo Electric industries and Energy Developments Pty Limited.

About you
To be successful in the role, you will have:

• A PhD in area relevant to Engineering, Nanotechnology, Chemistry, or Physics.

• A strong track record of research in development of devices integrated with nanomaterials.

• Experience with device/system fabrication, characterization and measurements.
