About the job
The Department of Media and Communication offers practical and industry linked courses that provide students with a real-world focus to their studies. The close link between our teaching and cutting edge research gives our students access to the latest developments in their disciplines. Swinburne’s Department of Media and Communication is consistently ranked in the top 200 worldwide according to the QS rankings. In 2015 the Excellence in Research Australia assessed Communication and Media Studies (FOR 2001) at ‘4’ or ‘above world class’.
The incumbent will be expected to have extensive experience and demonstrated achievement as a journalist practicing in industry and remain active in the field. They will contribute to our innovative and industry-responsive curriculum design through leading the development of learning materials and assessment, including teaching for publication through the use of our digital publication outlet The Standard. They will build on the discipline’s focus on sector-linked and collaborative projects that develop both real world and transferable skills. Additionally, the appointee will contribute to the research profile of the discipline and department by participating in, and leading research focused on journalism and journalism education. He/she will be actively involved in the supervision of postgraduate research students and mentoring of colleagues.
The incumbent will be expected to operate as a member of both discipline-based and interdisciplinary teams in order to promote Faculty objectives. The incumbent will be expected to engage in appropriate activities that will maintain and develop their scholarly, research and professional expertise.
Skills and experience
To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate the following:
• Doctoral Qualification in a relevant field
• Extensive experience and demonstrated achievement as a journalist practicing in industry
• Demonstrated experience in tertiary teaching, including leading the development of curriculum and engaging teaching, including teaching to publication
