  • Based at the City campus, but may be required to work and/or be based at other campuses of the University. We work in a hybrid model so you may choose to do your best work from other locations on certain days.

About the role /College

As one of the largest Business Schools in the Asia Pacific region, the College of Business and Law is comprised of five schools – four in Melbourne and one in Vietnam - delivering a broad range of programs up to PhD level.

 

The School of Management has two Departments – the Department of Management, International Business, and Entrepreneurship (MIBE), and the Department of Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations (HRM&IR). These Departments were created within the School in December 2020 and provide an opportunity to work with colleagues to shape a shared narrative and recognised areas of strength for the future.

 

The Department of Management, International Business and Entrepreneurship comprises 26 full-time members of academic staff. Members of the Department currently manage and teach into programs in management, international business, entrepreneurship, and innovation and enterprise. The School is developing new curriculum and programs, including in organisational analytics and evaluation, social impact, and technology and business.

 

The Head of Department is responsible for academic and operational leadership and for driving learning and teaching quality, research relevance and industry engagement for members of the Department. This includes being accountable for program quality, relevance and compliance of the School’s academic programs and courses. The incumbent will mentor, influence, guide and lead staff in the Department.

 

The Head of Department is a key member of the School executive and contributes at a senior level to the strategic planning and development of the School. The incumbent is required to work collaboratively with all members of the School’s academic and professional staff.

 

In addition, the role is responsible for establishing and maintaining important external relationships relevant to the Department’s scholarship, including with national and international scholarly and professional associations, funding bodies, industry partners, and key journals and conferences.

 

About you

You will have:

 

  • Strong academic leadership and management skills with demonstrated ability to lead people to shape a narrative, build recognised strengths, and deliver on strategic objectives. 
  • High-level interpersonal, communication, influencing and negotiating skills including the ability to consult, network, collaborate, mentor and build relationships within the organisation and externally.
  • Internationally recognised research standing in one or more of: organisation or management theory; quantitative or qualitative or mixed methods research; applied research and/or program and policy evaluation in one or more specific sectors (e.g., healthcare); business analytics or organisational analytics.
  • A strong record of innovative and effective teaching in a discipline relevant to the School. 
  • Demonstrated capacity to think strategically and to act based on organisational priorities and objectives.  
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of relevant industry and training priorities, and demonstrated scholarly, professional and industry networks. 
  • Ability to work effectively in a collegial environment, to develop and achieve shared goals and objectives, and to negotiate agreed directions and outcomes. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of University systems in regard to managing to the budget, maintaining and improving quality, and good governance. 

 

Qualifications

Tertiary qualifications, including a PhD, in the relevant management discipline.
