  • Part-time (0.5 FTE), 1-year fixed-term contract until 30th June 2022 based at RMIT City campus but may be required to work and/or be based at other campuses of the University
  • Contribute to an innovative healthcare product developing microneedle-based, minimally invasive continuous molecular monitoring device by Melbourne-based start-up Nutromics Pty Ltd in partnership with RMIT University, funded by an Innovative Manufacturing Cooperative Research Centres project¬†
  • We aim to place the user at the centre of healthcare innovation. While developing cutting-edge medical products, we want research and design to be informed by user experience and needs at every step
  • We are seeking an experience service design and/or user experience professional to join us to deliver technology that people will use with enthusiasm to improve their wellbeing and quality of life
  • Play a pivotal role in contributing to the design and development of a novel medical technology utilising your in-depth knowledge and working experience in UX including UI wire framing, UX mock-ups, design mock-ups and story boarding
  • Report directly to Professor Sharath Sriram, Research Project Leader, with external co-supervision from Dr Robert Crowder, Head of Product, Nutromics Pty Ltd
  • Remuneration between Academic Level A ($68,983 - $93,569) up to Academic Level B ($98,495 - $116,965 with PhD) + 17% superannuation

About You and the Role

  • Focus on designing Nutromics Pty Ltd¬ís first product to market, a therapeutic drug monitoring device using and embedding your research expertise in drawing out the narrative of the use for the products, in conjunction with Nutromics staff members and third parties;
  • Be actively involved in the research team projects covering fundamental research and industry partnership in the areas of service and UX design for healthcare innovation and completing the assigned task within the required timeframes;
  • Communicate and deliver high quality research outcomes & findings through high quality papers/ journal articles, delivery of seminars, and conference attendance;
  • Contribute 5% of your time to teaching and learning activities appropriate to areas of expertise as well as administrative functions, annual work planning and performance management related to this project.


Mandatory: Degree qualified in UI/UX or Service Design.

  • Candidates who have completed or in the final stages of writing thesis / thesis submissions will be considered.
  • Candidates without a PhD would be offered the position at Level A6-A8. Candidates who have demonstratable industry working experience with the commercialisation of healthcare devices or technologies will be highly regarded.


  • Candidates with service design skills and experience including the ability to conduct process mappings, contextual enquiries, journeys of use and to visualise product service systems; to support the development of design requirements; and to develop personas, service blueprints and other service design materials is highly regarded;
  • Candidates with UX capabilities including UI wire framing, UX mock-ups, design mock-ups, and story boarding is desirable;
  • Candidates with experience or good working knowledge in healthcare processes, either in digital health or device development is encouraged to apply;
  • Proven capability to engage with stakeholders such as healthcare practitioners and clinicians, industrial designers, device and product teams, software, and hardware engineering in an innovation ecosystem;
  • Sound experience in conducting ethnographic user research in a healthcare context is favourable.

Note: Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children check.
