Technical Officer, Research (Brunswick)

• Full-time, fixed term until March 2022   
• Salary Level HEW 6 + 17% Superannuation and Flexible Working Arrangements
• Based at the Brunswick campus, but may be required to work and/or be based at other campuses of the University

About You

Reporting to the Manager, Planning and Resources, you will responsible for the management of the School of Fashion and Textiles research facilities (laboratories and workshops) and coordination of the user’s requirements for these facilities. You will provide specialist technical support on the use of a diverse range of research equipment, safety equipment, materials, and chemicals to all users of the research facilities.

You will implement quality control measures, resolve technical issues, and aid in the development of prototypes to enable research staff and HDR candidates to meet research objectives.

Additionally, you will be responsible for the implementation and enforcement of OH&S (Occupational Health and Safety) protocols specific to the research facilities. Working closely with management, academic and professional staff and HDR candidates of the School, you will ensure compliance with OHS legislation.

To be successful in this position, you’ll have, but not limited to:

• Demonstrated technical knowledge and expertise in the specialist areas of practice-based research and technical textiles research.
• Strong inter-personal skills with the ability to provide both written and verbal communications to a range of audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to deliver inventive and flexible solutions to staff and students across a broad range of activities and equipment, in response to research, learning and teaching objectives.
• Willingness to take on new challenges, work independently, and organise workload to ensure timely completion of tasks.
• Demonstrated experience in managing student workshops or equivalent industry experience including coordinating and/or carrying out maintenance of and repairs to equipment, developing teaching aids, undertaking research and providing advice in emerging technologies/ systems/processes.
• Demonstrated high-level knowledge and application of OH&S legislation and regulations particularly in regard to Workshop environments and the management of chemicals.
• Demonstrated experience in conditions lab testing would also be an advantage.
