About the scholarship
William Piper Brown graduated from Swinburne in Engineering in 1938. He later served as President of Swinburne Council and was a Life Governor. The WP Brown PhD Scholarship was created to celebrate WP Brown’s achievements as a world leader in the field of concrete and to honour his combined commitment to both the Higher Education and Engineering sectors.

The candidate will be a high calibre graduate who is interested to explore a new and innovative concept which may potentially change the industry in the areas of structural engineering and/or construction technology. Working with internationally leading researchers, the candidate will develop a research concept within this field and have the opportunity to utilise one of the best equipped structural engineering and digital construction laboratories which are located at Swinburne University of Technology (Hawthorn Campus).

The research outcomes are expected to contribute to the development of more efficient infrastructure systems and safer buildings, bridges, offshore structures and/or mining structures with possible economic and social benefits towards more resilient, robust and efficient infrastructure constructed with innovative materials.
There is ONE full PhD Scholarship available for the duration of three years. There may be opportunities for additional research assistant and sessional tutoring work.

Skills and experience
To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate the following:
• Bachelor (Honours) or Master degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, or similar discipline.
• Passionate and have interest in pursuing a PhD degree.
• Able to conduct challenging research independently.
