About the Role 
We are seeking a suitably qualified Deputy General Counsel and University Secretary to join us in our Governance & Assurance Unit. 

This senior position will support the General Counsel and the University Secretary and be responsible for managing University-wide legal services, attending and supporting the work of University Council Committees, and providing legal, governance and secretarial support and services to the University’s controlled entities.

As the Deputy General Counsel and University Secretary, you will build and maintain organisational knowledge of the University’s strategic interests, major assets and enterprise risks, including key collaborations and ventures, associated entities, landholdings and major projects. 

In this integral role, you will deliver high quality, responsive legal advice and governance services, ensuring compliance, facilitating the management of risk, building relationships and supporting the strategic direction of the University. You will also possess the ability to provide fit for purpose pragmatic solutions to complex legal and governance issues relevant to a University context.

 

About You  
To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities: 
  • Significant experience gained in reputable private legal practice or in-house including corporate and commercial work.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate relationships with government, regulatory authorities, stakeholders and other parties having dealings with the University.
  • Understanding of the corporate governance requirements of corporations and public bodies.
  • Ability to work without supervision or direction, to show initiative, to manage uncertainty and to anticipate and meet the needs of the Senior Executives.

Qualifications
Authorised to engage in legal practice as a corporate legal practitioner in Victoria.
