About the Child, Youth and Family (CYF) Program

LWB delivers a range of services for children, young people and their families, throughout Australia. We use Cornell University’s Children and Residential Experience (CARE) model of practice to guide our work. Through ongoing training and support we use this model of practice to equip carers and staff to support children in a way that creates conditions for positive change.

 

About the role

An new opportunity has become available at Life Without Barriers for a House Manager to work within our Residential Care programs in across Hobart. Reporting into the Operations Manager Residential Care, the House Manager will oversee the day-to-day operations of the residence house. Most importantly you will ensure that we are creating a safe and culturally appropriate and healing environment for children and young people.

This is a hands-on role with most time spent on site in the home or in the community. This position is being offered as 12 month Fixed Term, Full-Time position, with access to salary packaging.

You will mentor a team of residential support workers in providing purposeful support to young people in residential care, with high and complex needs. You will strive to enhance the lives of young people in a 24/7 residential setting, incorporating a therapeutic, trauma informed approach within the daily structure and purposeful programming. There is a strong emphasis on leading your team to provide a secure base for our young people within the home, liaising with culturally appropriate services, and providing opportunities for the young people to connect with the culture in which they identify within.


Key Responsibilities

  • Build professional, trusting relationships with children and young people through visible interest and active engagement.
  • Ensure the home is a place that is emotionally and physically safe, nurturing, and appropriately engaging and stimulating, to foster growth and resilience.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of the Departmental Case Plan (where applicable) and develop and implement the LWB Case/Care plan that drives day to day service delivery.
  • Manage, support and provide reflective supervision and team meetings to a team of residential workers, and lead staff to work as a team in the best interests of children and young people.
  • Support staff to apply the Therapeutic Crisis Intervention system (TCI) to prevent, de-escalate and respond to crisis incidents involving children and young people.
  • Undertake rostering of residential workers ensuring that risks are managed and staffing levels reflect the needs of children and young people living in the home.
  • Coordinate the intake and transition of new children and young people into the home and the exit of children and young people to permanent homes or step-down services.
  • Ensure the CIRTS database is up to date with all client information.


Skills & Experience

  • Minimum Certificate IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention or relevant qualification (essential).
  • Experience working with children and young people who have experienced trauma and disadvantage.
  • Experience in the co-ordination and management of 24-hour residential services for vulnerable people.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and leading a team
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage crises and critical issues and deal with complex and challenging situations.
  • Current Unrestricted Australian Drivers Licence.
  • First Aid and CPR Certificates (or willingness to obtain if successful).
  • Completed Safe Environments training or willingness to complete before commencement (essential).
  • Willingness to undergo psychological assessment (essential).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including strong interpersonal skills, use of Microsoft Office packages.
