About the Role
We are currently seeking a Senior Technical Officer to join our Academic Operations Unit in the Fabrication Workshop to provide specialised technical support in the manufacture & fabrication of complex bespoke mechanical devices, providing workshop support to the various disciplines and Research Centres within the Schools.
Under the direction of the Fabrication Workshop Manager, you will perform duties related to manufacturing and fabrication within the schools workshops and contribute to the day-to-day operations and maintenance of other nominated workshops, and laboratories & facilities as directed.
The position is broad in scope and requires a high degree of initiative and self-management to deal with the wide range of functions and tasks.
About You
To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:
- Experience in the development, repair and maintenance of industrial and/or laboratory equipment, instrumentation and control systems as applied to teaching and research applications.
- Experience in the manufacture of mechanical components & equipment from basic drawings supplied by staff, students and researchers.
- Experience in workshop management and laboratory operations including purchasing, preparation, maintenance and storage.
- Skilled in the use of a wide range of conventional machine tools such as lathes, milling machines and surface grinders, as well as skills in the use of Arc, MIG, TIG and gas welding techniques for metal fabrication.
- Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety policies, procedures and compliance.
- Experience in a tertiary environment or research and development organisation is highly desirable.
Qualifications
- An appropriate trade qualification in Fitting and Machining and/or Toolmaking, or Metal Machinist or an allied field with a minimum of 3 years relevant experience.
- A Mechanical Engineering degree with subsequent relevant experience; or extensive experience and specialist expertise or broad knowledge in technical or administrative fields; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Licence to drive and operate a forklift (or willing to undertake training for a licence).
