About the role

As a Case Manager within our Family Based Care team in Norwest (Bidjigal Country), you will work closely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people, their families, and carers, supporting them to develop and implement case plans that honour and respect their cultural identity and needs. You will collaborate with families to ensure that cultural connection, traditions, and community ties are maintained, while also working towards achieving permanency goals.

Your role will be vital in mentoring and coaching carers in managing trauma-based behaviours through the CARE framework, ensuring they are equipped with the skills and support needed to provide culturally safe care for the child.

Life Without Barriers considers that being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent is a genuine occupational requirement as outlined in section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act (1991) and permitted as a 'special measure' under section 8 of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth) and by articles 1(4) and 2(2) of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.  You will be required to provide contact details for a cultural referee who can comment on your knowledge of issues impacting on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities in contemporary society and your ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The cultural referee must identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person.  

 Skills & Experience

  • Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.
  • A recognised Degree qualification in Social Work, Social Sciences, Psychology, Nursing or Mental Health, or a recognised Diploma in a related field and working toward a Degree qualification is preferred but not essential
  • Previous case management experience within an Out Of Home Care (OOHC) /Child Protection setting
  • Experience supporting Children & Young People with disability, who have experienced backgrounds of trauma, abuse and/or neglect.
  • Working understanding of the NSW Permanency Support Program
  • Understanding of trauma and its effects on children and young people
  • Current unrestricted drivers’ licence 

Successful candidates will be required to clear probity checks including National Criminal History Record Check and Working with Children Check.
