About the role:

An exciting opportunity to join the dynamic multidisciplinary Healthy Liveable Cities Group at the Centre for Urban Research. As the Spatial Research Manager, you will lead and manage a team of spatial researchers undertaking a range of research and consultancy projects. The team uses a wide range of methods, tools and data to conduct spatial analysis of the built environment. In this role, you will have three major areas of focus:  leading the spatial team’s activities in the construction of innovative spatial measures and indicators; overseeing the use of cartographic techniques for mapping and visualising social, economic and environmental liveability indicators through online interactive mapping platform (the Urban Observatory); and planning and managing within budget, the work program for the geospatial aspects of consultancies and research projects.

About you:

You will have extensive experience in research and/or project leadership with the ability to build and develop interdisciplinary project teams and mentor staff to deliver high quality outcomes. You will have strong organisational and project management skills with the ability to manage complex budgets and contribute to project proposals and grants. You will demonstrate experience in the use of spatial analysis in an applied field and have strong IT skills in areas such as; use of GIS software and spatial databases, as well as ability to program in Java, Python and SQL.


Mandatory: Master’s Degree or higher (or equivalent) in computer science, engineering or other relevant field.

Desirable: Web mapping and/or web development, visualisation and cartography, remote sensing, machine and deep learning.
