About the job
Our Mathematics Department is premised on being the seed from which all the sciences grow. We offer undergraduate and postgraduate study in applied mathematics. We are currently looking for a new Department Chair to join us. In this role, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the strategic development and management of the Department’s academic offerings, research profile, student experience and external engagement. You will lead a growing team of passionate and driven academics, and promote a spirit of interdisciplinary collaboration to improve and expand the department. As our Department Chair, you will work closely with the other key research and support areas of the university to support the activities and build the external profile of the Department. With your passion for Applied Mathematics, you will build the reputation of the Department by representing the University and School as appropriate, including in external engagement and research activities. 

About you
We are looking for someone who is a passionate Applied Mathematician with a demonstrated background in collaborative leadership. Your field of expertise will align with one of our 3 applied mathematics research interests in the Department: mathematical biology, dynamical systems or physical applied mathematics, with a clear connection to our research institutes highly desirable. With your reputation in applied mathematics, you enjoy sharing your knowledge and creating teaching programs that bring current industry trends into the curriculum to support our goal of future ready learners. Your previous leadership experience has seen you create cross disciplinary collaborations and elevate the awareness of mathematics as a key discipline.

• Demonstrated ability to both lead and be an effective team contributor for the development of new courses in the relevant disciplines and inspire staff to deliver innovative course design in a multi-disciplinary setting.

• Effective strategic, analytical and conceptual skills, together with the ability to contribute to devising and implementing strategic plans in a complex organisational environment.

• Demonstrated high level of interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to liaise with a wide variety of academics, work within a consultative, team environment in multi- disciplinary contexts, including an ability to work effectively with senior external members of the Faculty, University and relevant professions in industry and government.

• An understanding of the tertiary education sector in Australia, including international activities, and trends in leadership and management of contemporary universities in a rapidly changing and competitive environment.
