About the job
Swinburne Centre for Urban Transitions http://www.swinburne.edu.au/research/urban-transitions/ has one (1) PhD scholarship available for people with a passion for understanding urban transitions through in-depth research.
The Centre for Urban Transitions at Swinburne was established in 2017 to produce high quality and high impact research fousing on household and firm behavior, planning and governance to achieve needed urban transitions, both in Australia and internationally.
The Centre has a distinct role within the broader field of urban change. Its research themes tackle three of the major urban challenges, which require a holistic assessment of the social, political and behavioral influences and innovations that shape cities. These are:
We invite applications from suitably qualified candidates to undertake a PhD in in these or other areas relevant to urban transitions. Successful candidates will be able to develop their own project if it fits with the broader aims and supervisory capacity of the Centre. The scholarship is not part of a funded research project, but students are expected to contribute to the Centre’s publication and impact program and aspirations.
Successful applicants will join a cohort of PhD students already at the Centre and be involved in its vibrant research culture.

Applications will be assessed on the basis of i) their academic merit; ii) policy merit; and, iii) clarity of proposal’s research question(s), data availability and methodological selection and justification. Existing peer-reviewed publication track-record is an advantage, but not a necessity. See ‘Key Selection Criteria’ for further information.

The scholarship covers tuition fees for up to 4 years and provides and annual (indexed) stipend of $27,082 (2018 rate) for three years.
