About SAGE at Swinburne

As a member of the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) program, Swinburne is taking positive steps to effect change and we are committed to advancing gender equality in academia and in particular in STEM disciplines. While women comprise almost half of the nation’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) PhD graduates, less than 20% of senior academics in STEM disciplines at Australian universities are women. We understand that to attract and retain the best scientists and engineers and ensure research excellence and impact, it is important that we commit to providing diverse, secure, exciting and rewarding career paths to our best researchers who will be our future STEM academic leaders.

As part of our plan to increase the participation of women in our STEM academic workforce, Swinburne is now offering Research Fellowships through our Vice Chancellor’s Research Fellowship scheme - “Women in STEM”.

About the job

We currently have a 3-year research-intensive fellowship, followed by an ongoing standard research and teaching academic position available. In this prestigious position, you will be located within the School of Engineering and work as part of the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology, which has a strong culture of research excellence and industry partnerships.

During the Fellowship, your primary purpose will be to conduct high quality research in one or more of the following areas: Mechanical Design and Automation, Construction Automation, Construction Technology, Building Information Modelling and Digital Design. You will also generate research outputs that contribute to the University’s research excellence and impact, ultimately contributing to our 2025 vision of creating social and economic impact.

Upon conclusion of your research intensive, an ongoing Lecturer position will be available to you in Civil and/or Mechanical Engineering, where you will be contributing to other appropriate professional activities within the Faculty. In your research, you will make an independent contribution that expands knowledge, contributing to the Faculty’s research excellence and impact in collaboration with external partners as required. As one of our Lecturers, you will perform teaching duties, including developing and supporting academic programs and working with the academic team in the development of program change and innovation.

About you

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • doctoral qualification in either Civil, Mechanical, Robotics, Mechatronics or a related field
  • demonstrated research excellence, with the ability to take on a leadership role in developing and securing research grants
  • high standard of interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment
