To meet critical sustainability goals, the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) sector needs to accelerate digital transformation processes.
We are looking for qualified applicants to join our diverse cohort of PhD researchers leading the change. At Arch_Manu, we are embarking on an ambitious program of industry-embedded research and training activities guided by our 6 objectives: to reduce the (1) carbon emissions, (2) resource consumption, and (3) waste production of the AEC sector, while delivering projects (4) on time, (5) on budget, and (6) for the benefit of the community.

Arch_Manu is an exciting government-funded collaboration between academia (UNSW, Swinburne University of Technology, University of Adelaide), and Australia's leading architectural design/engineering practices and professional bodies. We have 1 PhD stipend scholarship on offer at the Swinburne University of Technology for an enthusiastic and motivated candidate to join our team of 25 PhD researchers as we embark on this important research.

Analytics PhD Topic 6, What are the barriers to architects adopting new technology, and what are the implications for individuals, teams, and managers when a firm adopts a new technology?

This topic covers issues of: accessibility, training, communication, and cost of the use of technology for design and fabrication; and may include visualising social connections and interfaces to support technology adoption in architectural manufacturing.

As a PhD Candidate in our Centre, you will receive specialised training in innovative digital technologies that are shaping the future of the Architecture, Design, and Engineering industries. Crucially, you will be part of an interdisciplinary network of researchers working collaboratively on interconnected industry problems and challenges.

Further, you will have the unique opportunity to work closely with our industry partners in an embedded mode, based within their offices and collaborating with their project teams on various interdisciplinary research projects. Our industry partners (including renowned firms such as Architectus,?Bollinger + Grohmann,?Cox,?Grimshaw, and?Tzannes) will provide you with practical industry experience, exposure to world class projects, and opportunities for exciting employment prospects at PhD completion.

You will also have access to domain experts in partnering international institutions (University College London,?Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia Barcelona, the?Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Copenhagen), and peak body organisations (Australian Institute of Architects, Architects Accreditation Council of Australia, Australian Consulting Architects, NSW Architects Registration Board) further enhancing your research and networking opportunities.

The timeline for commencing your PhD varies, with multiple start dates available in 2024, allowing you to choose a timeline that fits your needs and availability.
