About the role:

An exciting and unique opportunity to join our Student Life team as the Disability Transition Support Officer! This role is offering a long term contract until February 2028.

The role of the Disability Transition Support Officer is to provide one-to-one specialised and intensive support for students with disabilities transitioning from secondary school (including specialist schools and alternate education settings) to Box Hill Institute. This role will act as a dedicated Disability Transition Officer for BHI to facilitate information transfer to relevant TAFE staff, liaise with secondary schools and provide tailored guidance to learners with disability to help them navigate the transition into TAFE.

Working within a ‘Team Around the Learner’ framework this position is responsible for oversight of case-management of students throughout their first 90 days of enrolment. The role will partner with secondary schools to develop understanding of the TAFE environment and share transition best practice within the Victorian TAFE Network.

As part of the broader BHI Student Life Team, the Disability Transition Support Officer will work alongside Box Hill Institute’s Accessibility Liaison Service (ALS) and report directly to the Manager, Student Accessibility Support Services.

The Student Life team plays a key role in promoting inclusive educational delivery and ensuring that reasonable adjustments are made to meet the needs of learners and students with accessibility needs as required by legislation and to meet educational standards. The team interacts dynamically with teaching and support employees throughout BHI to drive equity of opportunity through innovative and effective strategies framed by sound policy and quality frameworks and an active Accessibility Action Plan. Exercising a set of professional skills and competencies, the team works closely with support and teaching colleagues to contribute to the retention and engagement of learners and students and to help build a supportive and successful learning community.

This position is fixed term until February 2028 and salary is PACCT 6 $77,949.00 per annum (exclusive of superannuation).

About You:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and extensive experience working with people with disabilities
  • Demonstrated working knowledge and application of the Victorian Child Safe Standards and National Child Safe Principles
  • Extensive knowledge and application of appropriate behaviours when engaging with children, including children with a disability and from culturally and/or linguistically diverse background
  • High level understanding of the experiences that young people with a disability, mental health and/or medical condition may have during educational and life transitions
  • Comprehensive and current understanding of policy and legislative settings relevant to the rights and responsibilities relevant to people who identify as having a disability
  • General awareness of, and familiarity with, the secondary school and Victorian Vocational Education and Training (VET) environments, and the capacity to source specialist information from other areas within the institution (such as the TAFE Education lead) to help address specific technical matters associated with the student’s transition
  • Knowledge of Reasonable Adjustments in the context of higher education and obtain the capacity to solve problems, make independent decisions and call on others where appropriate
  • Strong communication skills including written and spoken communication as well as high level interpersonal skills particularly in the context of stakeholder engagement
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver information, resources and training to build the capacity of others in support of people with a disability undertaking educational and life transitions
