About the Role

As a Disability Support Worker, you will be providing person-centred active support to people living with disabilities in the Newcastle region. The assistance you will be required to provide will differ on the support needs of each client, however, experience with personal care, manual handling, behaviour support with clients of high behaviours of concern and high medical needs will be highly regarded. We have opportunities across both of our support programs.

Our Supported Independent Living services enables the people we support to live comfortably and as independently as possible within in their home. It includes help or supervision with daily tasks, like personal care or cooking meals. These supports are most suitable to individuals who can work flexibly across a 24/7 roster and pick up a range of short and long shifts. Ability to work sleepovers and active overnights is REQUIRED.

Our Lifestyle and Community Program allows you to work shifts between 6am to 10pm Monday to Sunday. These supports cater to the individual interests and abilities of our clients and often include social outings, recreational and leisure activities. The ability to work autonomously and without supervision is critical in this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support clients with daily personal care such as bathing, shaving and toileting will be required
  • Provide mobility assistance by lifting, transferring and hoisting clients
  • Ability to follow person-centred active support plans and behaviour support plans respectfully
  • Help clients reach their goals through meaningful activities of their choice
  • Track and document the changing needs of clients through thorough record-keeping
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with clients, their families and your team
  • Advocate for client choice and control in a way that is safe and compliant

Skills & Experience

  • An unrestricted New South Wales driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Committed to work flexible work hours across the week, including public holidays
  • Demonstrated ability to use basic technology and software on a mobile and desktop
  • A current First Aid Certificate, which includes the course HLTAID003 or HLTAID011
  • A current Mental Health First Aid or willingness to obtain
  • Certificate IV in Disability or Cert IV in Mental Health will be highly regarded
  • Experience with clients in mental health and behavioural settings

Successful candidates will be required to clear all state-based probity checks; including but not limited to a National Criminal History Record Check and NDIS Worker Screening Check.

Please note: To be considered for and appointed to a position at Life Without Barriers, you must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with a minimum of two (2) doses or hold a valid medical exemption certificate, in accordance with Life Without Barriers Employee COVID-19 Vaccination Policy. You will be required to provide evidence of your vaccination status during the recruitment process.
