Our National Immigration Support Service (NISS) offers comprehensive assistance to individuals seeking asylum and refugees residing within the Australian community. 

Navigating the journey toward stability in Australia, as an asylum seeker or refugee, is fraught with challenges. About the Role 

 

Life Without Barriers is seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as Registered Mental Health Nurses to provide high-level healthcare support and expertise within NISS national program.  As a valued member of our team, you will play a crucial role in delivering essential healthcare assessments, developing care plans, and providing training and support to our clients and staff.  

The purpose of the Registered Mental Health Nurse is to provide a high level of health care assessments and consultation to the clients of the NISS program. Drawing on clinical knowledge and expertise, you will educate personnel, including support workers and case coordinators, on how to support clients with complex mental health needs. As an expert in your field, you will develop and monitor health care plans around meeting the changing health needs of individuals as they await a decision on a visa application.  

 These full-time or part-time, max-term (2 years) positions offer the flexibility to be based in Sunshine or Dandenong (VIC) or Parramatta (NSW), with options for both office and home-based work arrangements, accommodating a balanced work-life integration while contributing to a vital cause. A Tool of Trade Vehicle, including fuel card, will be allocated to the successful candidate as frequent travel to each of these locations is required. 

 

Key Responsibilities?? 

 

  • Provide a high level of health care assessments to support clients who are:? transitioning into the community from immigration detention?, living in the community under Residence Determination, or? living in the community on a bridging visa. 
  • Provide clinical knowledge and expertise to create assessments to support individuals transitioning into the community from immigration detention, those living in the community under Residence Determination.
  • Develop and monitor health care plans around meeting the changing mental health needs of individuals.
  • Provide training and support to LWB staff regarding health care plans.
  • Educate personnel, including support workers and case coordinators, on how to support clients with complex mental health needs. 
  • Assess the need for additional therapeutic and practical resources and services for clients and assist in securing these resources. 
  • To work in a multi-disciplinary team environment providing clinical skills, knowledge, and experience to guide the care team.

Skills & Experience  

 

  • Degree qualification in Registered Nursing and current registration with appropriate board. 
  • Significant experience working with people with people with a mental health or high support medical needs. 
  • Current knowledge and demonstrated experience of clinical practice around mental health planning. 
  • Effective time management and organisational skills. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to maintain high degree of confidentiality. 
  • Ability to use initiative and think laterally and strategically. 
  • Well-developed problem-solving skills. 
  • Ability to work independently and part of a team. 
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. 
  • Ability to travel. 
  • Experience working with people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds (desirable)  
  • Current Driver Licence. 

Successful candidates will be required to clear probity checks including National Criminal History Record Check and Working with Children Check (where relevant to the role).
