About the Portfolio and Role
The School of Science provides over 45 bachelor and postgraduate programs, and undertakes world class research across the disciplines of Biosciences and Food Technology, Chemistry and Environmental Science, Physics, Mathematical Sciences, Geospatial Sciences and Computer Science (Information Technology and Software Engineering). One of RMIT's top-performing research schools, we deliver research that addresses the 'real life questions' essential to Australia's innovation agenda.
The Technician Aquatic biology is expected to collect and process freshwater macroinvertebrate samples from several A3P/AQUEST programs, analyse macroinvertebrate data and produce technical reports. The Technician Aquatic Biology will also contribute to delivering the Monitoring Evaluation and Reporting (MER) of the Goulburn River and other projects conducted by this research group as directed by the Chief Investigator of AQUEST. Other major projects are Melbourne Water Seaford macroinvertebrate monitoring, the Armstrong Weirs desilting program, and other A3P/AQUEST projects that require the collection and analysis of freshwater macroinvertebrates and collection of other samples in the field including water and sediment quality sampling.
About you
You will be experienced with the identification of freshwater macroinvertebrates and have the ability to assess the condition of macroinvertebrates exposed to pollutants or environmental flows and conduct analyses of these data. You will be required to work in the acquatic environment field possibly over multiple days and utilise new techniques for ecotoxicological tests.
Ideally you will have participated in aquatic research projects and be experienced with data management thesis writing and technical report writing. In addition you will have good interpersonal and communications skills appropriate for interacting with staff, together with a strong commitment to teamwork.
